The Black Star Line – Close To My Roots is a project dedicated to creating great music featuring African and American artists and exposing the “true” African sound and its musicians to the global music market. Africa has a strong Hip Hop, Reggae and Cultural Rap presence that is often overlooked in regards to its worldwide musical influence. The continent has many talented artists that need to be exposed to the rest of the world.

Memphis Bleek and Abass Abass got together with David Mensah to create the album title song “Close To My Roots“. The record speaks on what it takes to come up in the game while still maintaining a grip of who you are and not compromising. Everyone knows Bleek from his Marcy Projects / Roc-a-Fella records roots and as Jay Z’s Protege. Bleek was one of the earliest supporters of this movement and one of the fortunate to have performed in a few countries in Africa. Coptic got to know Bleek while producing records for his albums. Abass Abass is a Senegalese powerhouse who currently lives in France, he is a dope MC with a lot of charisma. He spits in French on this record which brings a nice international flavor to it.

Live By Da Gun is a song where Brooklyn’s own Smiff-n-Wessun (Tek & Steele) team up with Ugandan MC Prince Eddie Atlas to create this hip hop masterpiece. Prince Atlas who lives in Kampala, splits his time between performing his royal duties and recording. On this record he talks about his rough childhood in Africa and the death of his father. Look out for his soon to be released album produced by Coptic. Smiff-n-Wessun is a well known Brooklyn rap group with many street hits under their belts. Coptic has produced several records for several albums including “Warrior’s Heart” Feat Dead Prez

Coptic was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa, but moved to the States when he was 13. He has produced records for The Notorious B.I.G (If I Should Die Before I Wake & Living The Life), Puff Daddy/Diddy (I Need A Girl), Jermaine Dupri (All That’s Gotta Go), Ma$e, KRS-One, Shyne and many more.

The 3rd edition of the FESMAN should be a great event, but many questions remains in regards to it's organisation.

Alongside international stars Akon and Angelique Kidjio, Senegalese President, Abdoulaye Wade confirmed in New York that the World Festival of Negro Arts (FESMAN) would take place from December 10th to 31th in Dakar, the Senegalese capital. But with just two weeks before it’s inauguration, many independent observers and journalists are expressing doubts and criticism about the organisation. With Brazil as guest of honour, the 2010 Black World Festival is meant to promote a new vision of Africa as free, proud, creative and optimistic and the will emphasize dialogue between peoples and cultures by covering all spheres of arts, culture and sports.

Initiated by President Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first edition of the World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures was held in Dakar in 1966. The first Festival brought together people from all generations and disciplines in order to make the rest of the world aware of the struggle and persistence of Black peoples in the face of colonization. In 1977, Nigeria hosted the second edition in Lagos and after with a 33 years hiatus, the third edition is to be held from December 10th to the 31th in and around Dakar in Senegal.

The festival is expansive in every way, including exhibitions, forums, lectures and performances spanning 16 disciplines (cinema, traditional and visual arts, crafts, dance, music, urban culture, design, literature, fashion, photography, theatre, food, architecture, science and technology, and sports). Events will take place all around Dakar, and in Senegal’s second city, Saint-Louis.

Here is another new sound from Africa, C.I.A. are a collective of mc's that represents the future while keeping their feet on the continent.

When thinking of African music, we usually associate drums, rattles or acoustic instruments such as the kora but we omit electronic music, synths and samplers. Because of the world music stereotypes, we assume Africans don’t use technology and yet if you follow the kuduro, coupé décalé, kwaito ( South African house ) or afrokrunk scenes, it is clear the digital age is in full effect. One great example of some the modern sounds coming out of Africa is C.I.A., a collective hailing from Ivory Coast that just released CIAfrica on Dutty Artz, the innovative label managed by globetrotting DJ Rupture. C.I.A. is not very dancey at all, not at least what we are used to when it comes to Africa and bass. Instead it’s abrasive, synthetic, angular, lyric-driven music. CIA stands for Clan Des Indigenes Accables of United States of Africa and “CIAfrica” is heavy, grimy, African rap straight from Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire featuring producer Green Dog (aka Amadou Komara), underground hero Manusa and Nasty among others.

If the music is mostly synthetic and abrasif, their lyrics are influenced by dancehall’s bragaddacio or rap’s evocative and more conscious side, the crew spits raw, vibrant lyrics that expose the vision of sacrificed generations from the inner African city. They cover political corruption, enonomic injustices and self affirmation, C.I.A stay off the beaten paths and positively proove that doors outside their Abidjan block are waiting to be opened. Check out their latest mixtape at this link.

When you think about American hip hop media, we usually thing about established magazines such as XXL Mag, The Source or the recent digital only Vibe Magazine but with the advance of the web, blogs such as Nah Right, You Heard That New , 2 Dope boyz or Rap Up are faster, better and cheaper to run than a printed hip hop news service. The commercial models are different and hip hop has totally becomed a digital culture, the printed magazine, the legendary mixtape ( cd ) and the high end video channels have been overturned by the new media culture of YouTube, Daily Motion and other sharing sites. Promotion has gone from physical to digital links and if the music industry is biting the dust, the music itself has never been so alive.

For African hip hop artists with a limited media industry, the web has becomed the primary way to get their music out to the rest of the world..For example, the Senegalese hip hop scene is known to be one of the most important in Africa, but when you look at it from the West, the best way to get valid news is from the internet sites made by and for Senegalese artists. Here is a couple of them.

Kingsize Sénégal came out of a joint venture with Kingsize Norway a unique North-South partnership, the site covers new releases, events, interviews and videos. It has become one of the main hip hip media to get the most recent information coming out of Senegal. King Size writers do not limit themselves to just music as they cover all disciplines such as dance, fashion, exclusive interviews, editorials and cover a broad view of what is going on.

Another good site, Hip Hop Sénégal presents the same type of news as King Size but has put an emphasis on local videos, interviews and gathers a community of hip hop fans and activists. This type of site opens the world to African hip hop artists and allows the rest of the world to discover the diversity and quality of African hip hop. Here is a clip from Nix called The African Dream…

The Museke Online Africa Music Awards (MOAMAs) is the inaugural awards held to celebrate African music and musicians achievement online. The power of the internet has enabled African musicians to market their music outside their communities and countries, to other African countries as well as to people outside the continent.

Museke.com has become one of the biggest African music websites with content from over 30 African countries and major traffic from African countries. It has helped musicians to be discovered by fans not from their home countries and has been a source of news, blogs for fans everywhere. Museke.com has been tagged the African music bible.

Museke is partnering with other African music fans and websites who are dedicated to seeing Africans learn about African music and promoting new and popular African music.

The first edition of the awards promotes as many African musicians from as many different countries and styles as it aims to unite African music fans everywhere.

There are 28 categories in all with 7 nominees for each. The nominees come from all over Africa and with varied styles.

Here at the UsofAfrica blog, we believe a much larger spectrum of African artists could of be easily worked on and wonder why there exists such a large discrepancy from one award show to the next ( MTV Africa, KORA, ect..), specifically in regards to the representation of French speaking African artists ( and also Portuguese for that matter ). Where are So Kalmery, Oumou Sangare, Ba Cissoko, Mulatu Astatke, Tinariwen, Rokia Traoré, Amadou & Mariam, Bassekou Kouyaté, Lura, Staff Benda Bilili or Konono #1 ?Another question, where is the Coupé Décalé scene from Ivory Coast ? It’s making a buzz worlwide but has not much visibility. All these great artists are ambassador’s of African music at large and we can only hope this on line contest will get better with time.

Voting will take place on http://awards.museke.com (http://moamas.com) until 15 May, with winners being announced on 1 June. Users can vote once everyday. If like us, you believe that Africa is the Future of music, please pass along these links, so we can have a global influence on the african musical scene.

Below is the full list of nominees (arranged by song/album, name & country). We have hightlighted a few of the most important categories from the whole contest.

The last awards were held in 2005 and after many years of doubts, critics and difficulties, we’re relaunched from their ashes. The 2010 Kora awards we’re finally held on 4 April in Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital and was supposed to be a tribute of Africans to the pop star Michael Jackson who died in June, the chairman of the organizing committee Ernest Coovi Adjovi told APA.

African superstar group, P- Square emerged African Artiste of the Year at KORA All Africa Music Awards held at Ouagadougou, Burkina-Faso, on Easter Sunday, 4 April, 2010. They beat out Senegalese group, Black Diamond, Angola’s Paul G and Burkina Faso’s Amety Meria. Peter and Paul Okoye from P-Square won $1m (742,000 euros). The occasion was graced by 3,000 people, including the host country’s president, Blaise Compaore. P-Square was unable to attend the show since they were performing at a concert in London. Apparently, they were flown to Burkina Faso in a private jet this week to get the award presented to them by President Compaore himself. An after event concert was staged at the Ouagadougou Stadium. Senegal’s Akon who had been invited but was unable to attend the ceremony.

Despite many setbacks, here are few other Kora winners:Best African Prospect - Becca (Ghana), Best Reggae Artiste – Wadada (Nigeria) Best African-American artiste of the Diaspora – Alicia Keys (USA) while Cape Verde’s Cesaria Evora and Gabon’s Pierre Akendengue picked up lifetime achievement awards, and a homage/tribute was also paid to the late Michael Jackson. At least one hundred television channels in 22 countries broadcast the ceremony live, organisers said.

Many artists who won an award we’re missing or just never showed up, including Senagaleses rap star Akon, who was sent a private jet and fully paid to perform that night but with his absence, it seems there is a lawsuit up in the air !In the Best Hip Hop artist or group category, when Smockey dedicated his Kora award to the late great Thomas Sankara, the controversy continued as his remarks were perceived to be a personnal attack on president Compaore’s role in Sankara’s death.

The music of his albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron’s recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. On his influence, Allmusic wrote “Scott-Heron’s unique proto-rap style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists”. A BBC documentary film called the Story of Gil Scott Heron exposes his story and the impact of his art on following generations. You can catch the 6 parts here.

In what will surely be regarded as one of the year’s best albums, Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m New Here is a project that’s been four years in the making. The result is an album that touches on many genres, from hip-hop and gospel to dubstep and blues. Above all, though, is the unmistakable sound of Gil Scott-Heron. while I’m Here has been hailed as one of his best since the seventies, the first single Me and The Devil is dark, transcendent and relevant. Gil Scott Heron is presently on a world tour from Europe to North America, including large festivals such as Coachella, make sure to catch him and understand why some call him one of the godfather of hip hop.

Each year, the Eurovision contest brings singers from all European countries for a highly mediated song competition. This year, Jessy Matador was selected to represent France in the 55th edition of this musical competition taking place May 29th in Oslo. Because of his Congolese origins and the coupe decalé style he uses, some cultural critics are showing signs of musical xenophobia. Is he really French ? Does his song represent France’s cultural traditions ? Will the judge care for this rhythm driven song? All questions that reveal uneasiness about Jessy Matador as the chosen representative.

Jesse Matador will perform Alé Ola, a hit also chosen as anthem for the French football team for this summer FIFA cup in South Africa. Ale Ola should be judged on it’s own merits. These issues can be related to the fact that France is going through a debate on national identity. Many leaders from minorities have condemned it as an attempt to deny the contribution made by immigrants in France. And If Matador wins, it would rally the defenders of cultural diversity. In the meantime, bonne chance Jessy.
