Avec Distant Relatives, un album fait en collaboration, Nas et Damian Marley unissent leurs énergies dans le cadre d’un colloque,  à Washington,  pour discuter de l’impact global du hip hop et du reggae. Le modérateur invité sera Sway Calloway ( MTV news ) et les invités DJ Kool Herc, Dj Red Alert et les légendes jamaiquaines U Roy et King Jammy. L’évènement présenté par National Geographic sera retransmis sur l’internet sur natgeomusic.net pour ensuite être inclus dans un film documentaire à venir.

L’album Distant Relatives doit sortir en 2010 et sera suivi d’une tournée mondiale.

With their upcoming collaborative album Distant Relatives on the way, Nas and Damian Marley will be hitting Washington D.C. for a panel discussion speaking on hip-hop’s and reggae’s global impact. MTV News’ Sway Calloway will moderate the debate, which is set to include rap pioneers DJ Kool Herc and DJ Red Alert, as well as Jamaican music legends Daddy U-Roy and King Jammy. The event, which is being presented by National Geographic, will be taped for an upcoming documentary and will also be broadcast live on natgeomusic.net. for those that cannot attend.

Quand le mc prend le micro, ses rimes sont là pour divertir mais une facette de son rôle est aussi d’instruire, informer, motiver et initier des débats. Depuis l’ère dorée des années 90, le rapper typique est passé du mode matérialiste, égocentriste, au discours  dénué de substance politique ou sociale. Bref, en 10 ans, le caractère CNN de rue du hip hop ( ref:Chuck D de Public Enemy ) s’est graduellement effacé de l’avant scène américaine et s’est rapproché d’une pop édulcorée ou d’un gangtérime stylisé. Pourtant, il se fait toujours des rimes sociales et poliques mais il faut maintenant viser sous la mélée, sous le radar des mass médias pour en voir la pointe de l’iceberg. Immortal Technique fait partie de ce nombre restreint de rappers à confronter dans leurs oeuvres aux  décisions gouvernementales, internes et externes de son gouvernement et aux règnes brutales d’un capitalisme omnipotent. Un artiste conscient qui voit son travail comme intégralement lié aux combats d’idées et peu couvert par la presse officielle, voici un interview de la télé russe ( en anglais ) qui soulève plus de questions que de réponses mais divulgue surtout un artiste complet, un citoyen clairvoyant devant les enjeux de notre ère.

When the mc grabs the microphone, his first goal is to entertain but as any artist or citizen, he also  has a responsability to inform, educate and motivate his audience on key issues. Since the golden era of hip hop, few have followed the steps of Public Enemy to create as Chuck D defined, hip hop as a CNN of the streets.  Most hip hop stars have followed the trends of materialism, stylised gangsterism and mooved the artform closer to  Billboard’s sugarcoated pop or  towards an aggressive braggadacio culture often dumbing down the impact of  lyrics for the catchiness of choruses.  Immortal Technique is an exception to the rules of the rap game, the  NYC latino wordsmith is not only educated but he is on a mission to engage issues and submit answers. We find him here in a interview with Russian tv covering a wide range of topics, from the world capitalist economy dogmas to the United State’s goverment intern an foreign policies. He might not have all the answers but he is asking the right questions.
